Niki Silverstein earned her undergraduate degree at New York University and eventually went on to receive her medical degree from the State University of New York at Downstate Medical Center Brooklyn, NY. From there, she completed her residency in ophthalmology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center.

After completing her residency she began her career working alongside the pioneer who invented the techniques used for modern cataract surgery. This sparked a catalyst for Niki Silverstein. Since then, she has taken the methods and added her own modifications.

There are a number of services that Niki Silverstein has offered at Silverstein Eye over the past years. One of the most popular is LASIK laser vision correction. This surgery is performed in order to improve overall eyesight by changing the way light is able to move through the cornea. Light is therefore bent differently and focuses on the retina, which means objects appear more clear and sharp. There is also the option of Photo refractive Keratectomy, better known as PRK. She has also offered this service since starting Silverstein Eye. This service can correct the eye’s prescription by by sculpting only the surface of the cornea without any cutting.

One of the services Niki is most proud to have offered her clients throughout the years is cataract surgery. She says she has performed more than 15,000 cataract surgeries over her career, which has been one of the main reasons why she has earned the distinction of being one of the top surgeons in Chester, New Jersey. Though cataract surgery is thought to be minimally invasive, it is a necessary surgery for many, mostly older citizens in the United States. Cataracts cause a clouding effect of the eye and it is estimated that more than half of the Americans who are 65 or older get the disease. Although we think of cataracts as an older person’s problem, they can occur at any age, due to trauma, medications, birth defects or environmental and genetic factors. The disease is not painful but does eventually cause partial or complete loss of sight. This is generally performed under local anesthesia.

Another eye problem that Niki Silverstein treats is glaucoma. Glaucoma is a leading cause for visual impairment and complete blindness throughout the United States. She will continue to promote regular eye examinations so people can be monitored for glaucoma since they normally would not experience any signs or symptoms. She performs medical, laser, and surgical treatments for glaucoma.

Glaucoma is often referred to as the “sneak thief of sight” . Early symptoms are usually not something a patient will notice because they do not directly affect vision. As the disease advances, though, peripheral vision will begin to decrease. In very advanced stages central vision can be blurred or lost if untreated. Glaucoma comes in two forms, and the most common version is chronic open-angle glaucoma which affects middle-aged people because of an abnormality in their genetics. That is why regular checkups are so important, especially as a patient ages, because the disease can seemingly come out of nowhere.

Many other eye problems such as diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, dry eye syndrome, are diagnosed and treated regularly among many other condition.

Prices are very competitive here as well so her patients can do one stop shopping for their eye wear needs.

When she is not working, she is usually finding a way to make the lives of her fellow American citizens better by supporting a number of charities.
