Phin Upham earned his BA in Philosophy from Harvard University. After Harvard, Phin attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he researched innovation and understanding how institutions interact to create the environment for success. His dissertation inspired him to write three essays: “Positioning knowledge: schools of thought and new knowledge creation” (2007), “Emerging scientific research fronts” (2009), and “Communities of Innovation: Schools of Thought and New Knowledge Creation” (2006).

Phin has published several essays related to his research on innovation during graduate school. Some of his papers include “Citation structure of an emerging research area on the verge of application,” “Finding cohesive clusters for analyzing knowledge communities,” and “Analyzing knowledge communities using foreground and background clusters.” Phin Upham has also published essays on subjects not related to his studies. Some of his essays include “A Model for Giving: The Effect of Corporate Charity on Employees,” and “The Interconnectivity of Capabilities and the Interdependence of Barriers to Entry: How Taiwan’s Giant Bicycles Broke into the US Bicycle Market.”

Prior to business school at Wharton, Phin was a writer for United Press International in Washington. While at UPI, he wrote a nationally syndicated column. Before this Phin was a journalist for Toronto’s National Post. Today, Phin is an investor for a U.S. family office / hedge fund where has worked in global macro and illiquid investing. He previously worked for Morgan Stanley in the Media group. Phin is a Term Member at the Council on Foreign Relations.
