Dale BeggSmith

Dale Begg-Smith was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on January 18th, 1985. He grew up in Vancouver and began skiing at a very early age. Throughout his early career, Dale Begg-Smith trained tirelessly alongside his older brother Jason Begg-Smith, and they competed for Canada in various mogul skiing events.

At age 16, Dale and Jason Begg-Smith made the move to Australia and did not compete for three years while they awaited Australian citizenship. The Begg-Smith brothers were unable to compete in the Olympics or any World Cup events during this time, making the transition a difficult but ultimately rewarding decision. They greatly matured as athletes, training with one of the best mogul coaches and teams.

Dale and Jason Begg-Smith began competing for Australia in various mogul skiing events. In 2005 Dale was awarded Ski and Snowboard Australia's Snow Sports Athlete of the Year. Dale had a successful World Cup career leading to the Torino Olympics with 10 podium finishes and 4 World Cup gold medals. Following his World Cup successes, Dale Begg-Smith attended the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy along with his brother Jason Begg-Smith. He made history as he won the Olympic gold medal by becoming the youngest man to ever win Olympic gold in the sport. In 2006, Australia Post noted that his gold medal put him in a "small and honored group of athletes" and issued a postage stamp commemorating Begg-Smith's achievement.

Following the Olympics, Jason Begg-Smith retired from mogul skiing and Dale went on to win the 2005-2006 World Cup season. Begg-Smith continued to win three World Cup season victories over the following four years. He went on to set the record for the most consecutive World Cup finals in events he has entered, by qualifying for 60 consecutive finals.

After his success at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics with a silver medal and having 4 World Cup season wins, Dale cemented himself as the greatest freestyle mogul skier of all time. Dale set the record for the only freestyle athlete to medal at all four major events entered, due to his Olympic and world championship podiums. He also became Australia's most successful winter athlete.

Begg-Smith enjoys giving back to Australia, the country he feels fortunate to be a part of. He spends time volunteering with young Australian mogul skiers, teaching them from his experience and skills. Mentoring young athletes, Begg-Smith is able to share his love of the sport.

Dale splits his time between multiple places including Australia, Europe and North America. He is an avid philanthropist, donating to many causes and charities over the years. Following the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Begg-Smith donated his prize money - reported to be around $13,670 - to earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. When he is not busy training or competing, Dale enjoys spending time with family and friends. He enjoys fishing with his brother Jason Begg-Smith, having won fishing competitions together. Jason has the Caribbean record for largest swordfish ever caught at 396 lbs. Outside of skiing, his hobbies include tennis, surfing, going to the gym and table tennis.
