am an experienced and qualified one to one and group supervisor of counsellors and psychotherapists.

For more than five years I have been supervising groups of trainee, qualified and accredited counsellors working on placement at Turning Point in Somerset, where I work as the Counselling Co-ordinator. Turning Point works with drug and alcohol misusers and I support our trainees in their work with our vulnerable adults.

Before this I supervised trainee counsellors at a youth centre in Kilburn, London, while they worked with young people aged 14-25. I worked in Kilburn for about 2 years.

As a supervisor, I believe in your self-efficacy and trust in the judgements you have made with your clients. My golden rule is to not to tell you what to do with your clients but support you to finding your own solutions. In this way, your learning is deeper and more authentic.

I am comfortable with providing advice when asked but work hard to nuture your self confidence and your inner supervisor.

The BACP recommend counsellors have 1.5 hours of supervision per calendar month. When we negotiate how often we should meet for supervision, I will take into account all of your supervision sources (peer, group, co-supervision) and advise where necessary. For most of my supervisees, meeting once a month is usually adequate.

I try and keep an open mind about everyone I see and I would never label anyone “mad”. For many people, saying things out loud to another human being can be terribly difficult. Often after people have told me about a “big thing” which has been troubling them, it somehow doesn’t seem so big anymore. That this can then be a source of grief is one of the many paradoxes associated with being a human being. I hear a lot of things in my job as a counsellor and I will probably respond in a useful way to you – this is yet another way in which counselling is different from chatting to your friends.

Choosing a counsellor is a very personal decision at the end of the day. Most counsellors have similar qualifications and ethical standards but what counts most is the kind of relationship you strike up with your therapist. Research has shown that the single most important factor in counselling outcomes is the so-called “therapeutic relationship”, or ,in a nutshell, how honest and open you feel you can be with your counsellor. This isn’t something you can decide solely on the basis of reading about me on a website unfortunately.

I’ve worked as a counsellor in the NHS, universities and with the charity sector as well as much private practice counselling. I’ve supervised, managed and trained teams of counsellors with challenging inner-city clients for many years.
