Military Service
Dr. Hugh Hetherington enrolled in the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1978, but he then decided to follow his interest in medicine and transferred into the biology program at Carroll College, located in Montana. Following this, he was accepted into the Saint Louis University School of Medicine where he obtained his undergraduate degree in 1982. After completing his first two years in medical school, Hugh returned to Carroll and graduated from there with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 1984. In 1986, he graduated from Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

Following his completion of schooling, he was commissioned a Captain in the Army Medical Corp and attended the Medical Officer Basic Course in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. From here, he went on to complete an entire year of transitional internship at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. Over the course of his year there, Dr. Hetherington served as house officer in multiple areas of medicine, including pediatrics, internal medicine, intensive care medicine and general surgery.

Upon finishing his internship, Dr. Hugh Hetherington was then assigned to the third brigade, second infantry division as brigade surgeon and the officer in charge of the Medical Treatment Facility at Camp Edwards in the Republic of Korea. During his service here, he provided both emergency and routine care to over 4,500 men and women stationed in the Western Corridor.

Alongside his medical duties at Camp Edwards, he was responsible for multiple other supervisory duties. He served as the supervisor for all of the operations at a fixed medical clinic and the four physician’s assistants stationed there. During his time in Korea, he also advised and informed company, second medical battalion, about emergency training.

Post-Graduate Training

Following Dr. Hugh Hetherington’s service abroad, he continued studies and was accepted into his residency training. The program he chose to follow was the specific practice of otolaryngology, or head and neck surgery. Otolaryngology is the oldest specialty in the medical profession and one of the most respected. Physicians who practice otolaryngology primarily concentrate on the uppermost parts of the body such as the head, neck, ears, throat, nose and face.

When Dr. Hetherington completed his time in Camp Edwards’ Medical Treatment Facility in the Republic of Korea, he was asked to return to Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington where he started his transitional internship. Here he completed his otolaryngology residency. This required him to complete an additional four years of training.

When Dr. Hetherington completed his residency in 1992, he was assigned to the Lyster Army Hospital and the United States Army Aeromedical Center at Fort Rucker, Alabama. The entire medical personnel that were stationed at Fort Rucker cared for a collective of 50,000 soldiers, veterans and members of their family. Here, he once again took on multiple supervisory roles; he was responsible for overseeing an audiologist and four different medical technicians.

Then during July in 1993, Dr. Hugh Hetherington was chosen to take part in additional Army-sponsored fellowship training. Between the time of July 1993 and June 1994, he underwent intense advanced training in the study of head and neck reconstruction surgery and skull base surgery at the Rush-Presbyterian-Saint Luke’s Medical Center based in Chicago, Illinois. He studied directly under the acclaimed Dr. William Panje. In addition to Hetherington’s studies in head and neck reconstructive surgery and skull base surgery, he was also trained in state-of-the-art techniques to treat sinus and nose disorders as well as cosmetic plastic surgery.

Academic Appointments

Just like his father before him, Dr. Hugh became a teacher. He was an appointed instructor at Rush-Presbyterian-Saint Luke’s Medical Center during the backend of his fellowship. It was here that Hetherington taught both otolaryngology and bronchoesophagology.

After he graduated from his fellowship training, he was assigned to Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. The military tertiary referral center provides care for a population of over 25,000 active duty service men and women, veterans, their family members and various other eligible beneficiaries, including citizens of the Pacific Island Trust Territories. He still credits to this day a lot of his medical experience to the Tripler Amery Medical center because of the wide range of unique and trying medical cases he was involved with.

Dr. Hugh Hetherington also held a teaching position at the Tripler Army Medical Center where he was in charge of supervising and training physicians who were serving residency at the medical center. To this day, Dr. Hugh has maintained his love for teaching. Since 1998 he’s held the position of Adjunct Associate Professor of Medical Sciences at Montana State University.

During his time here, he was decorated with multiple awards. Above every medal that has hung from his neck or office wall, Hetherington claims that serving his country and those in need was as all the reward as he required. His achievements included the following meritorious service medals: Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Meal and the Expert Field Medical Badge.
Dr. Hugh Hetherington strives to be a talented medical professional who plans to dedicate the rest of his career to furthering the lives and health of each and every one of his patients. He hopes to continue as a plastic surgeon at Big Sky Cosmetic Surgery, an office within the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, located in Bozeman, Montana. He’s proud to provide otolaryngological and cosmetic surgery to patients in his hometown in Montana. At his practice, Dr. Hetherington has been known to treat all patients as if they were family.

He also plans to continue teaching as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medical Sciences at the Medical Science (or WWAMI) Program at Montana State University located in Bozeman, Montana, which is where he lives and works in. Dr. Hetherington claims that the students aren’t the only ones learning in his classroom; he has continued to learn a great deal from the act of teaching and also continues to further his own education. He has contributed various publications for many medical journals on topics that he has studied over the years. He is also known for multiple presentations that he has made to his respected colleagues.
