After I left uni in 1998, I began employment with Queensland Rail as a level crossing technician, and went on to head up a survey of all rail level crossings in Queensland for a major upgrade project. The aim was to measure corridor sight distances and photograph each level crossing in the state. From here, my team had to compare this information against the MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devides) and make recommendations for non-conforming level crossings to be repaired and upgraded in accordance with this manual. During this survey, I also co-designed the database for the inclusion of the collected data to make it available to staff throughout the company directly on their desktop.
