Steven Korn is a business expert with diverse knowledge of news media, entertainment, leadership, mergers, acquisitions, private investing and board membership.
Steven Korn has a long history of business experience and a wealth of expertise in a variety of fields—among them news media, entertainment, leadership, mergers and acquisitions, private investing and board membership. In fact, though currently self-employed, he continues to serve in a board membership position, specifically on the board of directors of the Brown Shoe Company (NYSE: BWS).

His life is not solely devoted to business, however, and he does maintain a number of interests and passions outside of the office. His family is foremost in his mind. Korn is happily married, and he is the proud father of three children, two daughters and a son.

He enjoys sports, in particular he enjoys playing golf. The Korn family is devoted to baseball, and his son is currently playing ball his high school team, as well as a travel team. He plans to continue playing once he gets to college, and Steven Korn could not be prouder: There are few things he enjoys more than attending his son’s baseball games, and strives to be as supportive as he possibly can of his son’s athletic aspirations.

A strong believer in the importance of giving back, he has also served in board membership positions for a number of charities and nonprofits over the years.

As for what has enabled him to become so successful in his life, he attributes part of it to hard work and part of it to the pleasure of working with talented people over the years—but he also believes that he has simply been lucky in many regards, and is immensely grateful for the fortunate life he and his family have been able to live.
Steven Korn has amassed success in the world of business, serving as a high ranking executive in several media companies, and on multiple boards of directors. Today, he is devoted primarily to board service; in particular, he serves on the board of directors for the Brown Shoe Company. He is currently seeking further opportunities for board service; self-employed, he is most passionate about spending time with his family.

To his business endeavors, Steven Korn brings a strong educational background. He received his JD from Cornell Law School in Ithaca, N.Y., in 1978. He was a member of the National Moot Court Team and served as the chancellor of the Cornell Moot Court Board from 1977 through 1978. Before that, he graduated from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1975; he earned an A.B. with honors, and he was a Phi Beta Kappa.

A long time resident of Atlanta, Steven is self-employed as a private investor and a corporate director. He especially enjoys the freedom and flexibility it affords him. He invests directly in a variety of private and public companies, as well as private equity funds, for his own account. He has also served on a variety of corporate boards, including public companies, private companies and charitable and educational institutions.

There are several specific appointments worth noting, including a number of prestigious board positions on which Steven Korn has served in the last decade or so:

- Member, Board of Directors, Brown Shoe Company, 2004 – Present: Audit Committee.
- Senior Operating Partner, member Investment Committee, SV Investment Partners, 2002 to 2013; a New York based private equity investment firm specializing in buyouts and buildups of business services companies at the lower end of the U.S. middle market.
- Member, Board of Directors, Precision IR Group, 2006 to 2013; a SV Investment Partners portfolio company that provides Web-based communication solutions and online investor relations services to over 3,500 public companies in 13 countries.
- Independent Director, Direct Group, Inc., 2008 to 2010; an integrated, full-service direct marketing company, controlled by D.E. Shaw Direct Capital. As one of two independent directors, Korn participated actively in the sale of the company to Canadian investors.
- Member, Board of Trustees, Vassar College, 2000 – 2012; Chairman, Budget and Finance Committee; Executive Committee; Special Committee on Debt; Academic Affairs Committee. Steven Korn was delighted to serve in these capacities for his alma mater.
- Member, Board of Directors, Public Broadcasting Service, 2000 – 2008; Chairman, Investment Committee; Chairman, Compensation Committee; Member, Executive Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Finance and Budget Committee, Programming Committee, and Presidential Search Committee.

He has enjoyed this stage of his life and career, but before he became a private investor and board member, he was successful in a number of other positions. For example, Korn was the publisher of the Daily Report, based in Atlanta; he served in this role from 2005 through the beginning of 2008. He was responsible for all business, sales, marketing, circulation and editorial activities of this daily newspaper, which was targeted at the legal community.

His list of achievements goes on from there: From 1996 through the summer of 2000, Steven Korn was the vice chairman and chief operating officer of Cable News Network, Inc., in Atlanta. In that capacity he was responsible for the business operations of CNN and its subsidiaries worldwide. He was the vice president, general counsel and secretary of CNN’s corporate parent, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., from 1983 until 1996 where he oversaw the legal and business affairs of the company around the world and oversaw several acquisitions and mergers by the company culminating with the merger of Turner Broadcasting System with and into Time Warner Inc.

He also enjoyed success as an attorney, specifically working with the Atlanta firm of Troutman, Sanders, Lockerman and Ashmore (now, Troutman Sanders, LLP) from 1978 through 1983. Here he specialized in civil litigation, primarily involving media, entertainment and telecommunication issues—experience that would obviously come to serve him well in some of his later positions.

Finally, it is important to note that Korn is devoted to philanthropy and has served as the CEO for a nonprofit organizations and as a board member of a charity. He is excited to use his business acumen to make a difference in the world around him, whenever opportunity strikes.
What does the future hold in store for Steven Korn? While it is not possible to predict his future with total certainty, he has a number of aspirations and objectives, both in terms of his professional life and his personal life. One thing he loves is serving on various boards of directors, and he plans to continue serving on the board of directors for the Brown Shoe Company. Additionally, he hopes to serve on other boards for prestigious companies and organizations.

Steven is in a position where he is able to devote himself more or less fully to board membership, and he only wishes to serve on the boards of companies about which he feels strongly. Steven Korn does not necessarily intend to engage in other full-time work unless the “perfect situation” arises—and by that he means a situation where he could still spend time with his family and travel with his son as he pursues his baseball career.
