In high school, Deborah Peeples participated in a service club that provided tutoring to migrant children in Miami, Florida. This experience proved to be a turning point. She discovered the gratification of helping someone in need and the power to make a difference.
That early experience propelled Deborah in a new direction and a life’s work in the nonprofit sector. Through many years of experience, continuing education and partnerships with dozens of notable and worthy organizations, Deborah Peeples has helped provide successful outcomes and raise a great deal of money.
With 25 years of experience, groundwork and teamwork, Peeples has directed programs for nonprofit organizations and exceeded the identified financial goals.
Through her personal bent for teaching and learning, she has become a well-known and vibrant leader in her professional and civic community. Peeples approaches her work with a personal passion for promoting positive social societal change.
In 1997 Deborah Peeples began working for WETA TV/FM in Arlington, Virginia. Taking a position as director of major and planned giving meant she was responsible for the management and direction of WETA’s Leadership Circle and major donor program.
Fete-A-Tete was a creative special event featuring 10 dinner parties held on one night each based upon a PBS program, that Deborah Peeples created while working for WETA. PBS recognized the station with a special award for Outstanding Fund Raising events in 1999. The event was hosted by WETA’s board and major donors. In addition to raising more than $100,000 net in its first year, it provide a new catalyst for increased board participation in fund raising for WETA.
Prior to Capital Hospice Foundation changing its name to Capital Caring, Deborah Peeples served as president of the foundation and as a member of the organization’s executive team. With a mission to raise charitable dollars throughout the metropolitan region to support those suffering from life-limiting illnesses. The Capital Hospice Foundation also provided an important source of fund to underwrite continuing medical education for nurses and physicians on the growing practice of end of life care. Additionally, the Foundation Capital Hospice was able to play a vital role in engaging the community and raising more than $1 million annually for charity patient care.
Overall, The Capital Hospice Foundation raised more over $9 million annually in unrestricted funds thanks to exceptional community support and strong volunteer leadership. Deborah Peeples’ tenure also included the completion of a successful $ 1.7 million dollar campaign for capital improvement of the Halquist Inpatient Center in Arlington, VA. While serving as president, Peeples achieved a 22 percent fundraising growth in the short span of three years.
The Humane Society of the United States was where Peeples held the position of vice president of philanthropy most recently. This position allowed her to utilize her strategic development skills. Drawing upon her experience managing campaigns and her resilience and staying power, Peeples led the philanthropy department through its period of greatest growth.
In less than three years, she tripled the annual gift income and totally rebuilt and reengineered the philanthropy department staff, creating a talented senior department leadership team. This new team was vital to the plan Peeples envisioned to increase major donor support that included $1 million and $2million gifts from major donors across the country.
Between December 2010 and December 2012, the annual income increased from $6.1 million to $18.8 million. As far as success goes, this is the definition of what true triumph looks like.
Today, after three decades of work Deborah Peeples still carries the flame and passion that drives her to achieve success. With her eye on future opportunities, Peeples looks forward to working in a field that continues to grow and evolve. Speaking at this year’s Association of Fundraising Professional DC Metro Chapter educational speaker’s series in September 2013, Peeples hopes to encourage her colleagues to continue to grow and adapt to the dynamic, competitive not-for-profit sector.
Although the Association for Fundraising Professionals/ DC Metropolitan Chapter named her as outstanding fundraising professional of the year in 2008, Deborah Peeples does not let this or any other past success distract her from what she needs to achieve today. She knows that success in only measured by the work she can do in the present and this is what drives her to continue to work in a sector devoted to creating a better world.
When Peeples puts her mind on a task there is nothing anyone can do to deter her. Peeples takes charge of a campaign and attacks it with gusto and positive thinking. Creating the future and being a force for good, Deborah Peeples, can be counted on to leave a legacy of positive advancement.
