Mark began his education at New York University. Here he studied a variety of topics, eventually graduating with his Bachelor of Arts degree. His majors were in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Near Eastern Languages. While attending NYU, he also served as both the editor in chief of the yearbook and the vice president of the student government association.

After NYU, Kovler returned to school by enrolling at the Touro Law School, also in New York. Here he again served as the editor in chief of the yearbook as well as a delegate to the student bar association. After graduating, he received his Juris Doctorate degree, making him a full-fledged lawyer. His first several jobs afterward dealt specifically with both law and accounting.

In addition to earning his degrees, Mark A. Kovler, attorney, has also continued his legal education through many hours of training in many different fields. For example, he has more than 36 hours of tax training and over 16 hours of training in both elder law and retirement planning. He is a member of the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Health Care Compliance Association, and the Pennsylvania Bar Association. He is also a member of the National Eagle Scout Association, though this last membership is unrelated to his legal training.

Work Experience

Mark A. Kovler, attorney, began his legal career in earnest in 1995 when he joined Empire Stat, Inc. in New York, NY. Here he served as both general counsel and chief privacy officer, handling legal issues, insurance, and tax matters. He was also in charge of the supervision and performance evaluation of 14 staff members who were themselves responsible for reviewing and processing claims.

While here, he oversaw the creation of a customer service department, including the recruitment, training, and leading of personnel. He also created staff manuals on HIPAA compliance, drafted the employee handbook, and developed all company policy directives and training aids.

In 2002, Mark A. Kovler, attorney, left Empire Stat for Diller & Associates, a small law firm with 10 attorneys located in New York. Here he joined their ranks as an associate attorney, providing compliance expertise and handling tax matters. He also functioned as the chief compliance and privacy officer for multiple clients throughout numerous areas such as FMLA, ADA, HIPAA, KYC, AML, and the Patriot Act.

During his time with Diller & Associates, Kovler drafted policy agreements and statements in addition to implementing privacy standards for customers. He also oversaw four employees, including paralegals, as well as developed and implemented effective retirement plans. Finally, he was in charge of performing comprehensive audits to ensure full compliance with all required regulations.

Mark A. Kovler, attorney, stayed with this law firm for two years. Then, in 2004, he left to join Specialty Financial Advisors, Inc. in Danbury, CT, where he still works to this day. As their general counsel & chief compliance officer, he enabled the company to grow by more than 800 percent throughout his tenure. He did this by training their sales force on techniques for customer relations and marketing, introducing college funding and estate planning services, and obtaining the necessary funding for company expansion.

Kovler has also drafted company compliance manuals and successfully passed all audits to date. Also to date, he has completed all of his assigned projects on time and under budget. In addition, Mark A. Kovler has lead staff training seminars, instructed employees on compliance issues, and provided support to management for growth.
Mark A. Kovler, attorney, enjoys his current role as a chief compliance officer and general counsel. He also enjoys his current responsibilities, such as drafting training manuals. As such, his plans for the future mainly involve continuing to offer the same excellent services that he does today.

In other words, while he would like to move on in his career, Kovler wants to continue his general counsel work. He feels that his skills are applicable to a range of organizations and industries. Regardless of wherever his professional life may take him, he is confident that he will have the tools to succeed.

In addition to his legal career, Mark A. Kovler, attorney, also plans to continue serving his community, especially through his Boy Scout work. An Eagle Scout himself, Mark remains heavily involved with the Boy Scouts of America, including working as the chaplain of the local scout council. He also serves as the lodge advisor for the Order of the Arrow at Suanhacky Lodge and a legal advisor for the BSA Scholarship/Campership Committee. He is also a delegate for the Jewish Committee on Scouting, a health and safety coordinator for the BSA Camping Division, and the chairman of the BSA Endowment Committee.

By continuing his work with the Boy Scouts, Kovler will not only be serving his community and its youth, he will also be serving himself. He still enjoys scouting very much, especially the hiking and camping involved. If he can find the time, Mark A. Kovler, attorney would like to put his scouting abilities to the ultimate test by hiking, camping, and otherwise experiencing the entirety of the Appalachian Trail, a passion he has held since his own days as a scout. Unfortunately, he jokes, he cannot work and hike the AT at the same time.
