I worked with Mike for about two years at a daily newspaper. He was an editor at the time. We were all astonished that he was promoted as fast as he was within the paper. Talk at the time was his father had pulled strings to get him promoted, a behind the door deal of sorts. His father had been a county official somewhere and the paper owed him for past favors. As a boss, Mike had multiple favorites and treated employees accordingly. He was smug to the point of being revolting, and passive aggressive in his management style. One thing that stands out was how soft spoken he was, altering the volume of his voice according to which employee he was addressing. The least favorite would receive comments which were barely audible, a tactic he employed throughout my time there. Mike did not care who he stepped on in pursuing his career ambitions and largely favored women over men, men being a challenge to his ambitions. In one instance, Stanton purposely withdrew editorial oversight to make a reporter look bad and force that reporter to leave the job. We were all shocked at the setup since the reporter was a solid producer and broke a lot of news. He may have changed in the many years since I worked with him, but I doubt it. I would urge caution if you have to work with Mike.
