Don't Expect To Be Paid As is often the case in the "news" industry, websites like to make bank off of writers and pay them nothing. BWW "hires" dozens of writers to write articles and reviews for their site that they proudly proclaim is the biggest theater site, but they don't pay a cent. Not only are you not compensated for your time and writing, but they don't cover any costs associated with seeing any of the shows?and they're not giving out seats to prestigious shows for the most part. Most press passes you get are for smaller cabaret or off off Broadway shows that aren't always even worth the $6+ subway fare that you are expected to cover yourself. There's little room to actually cover things you want to see, even if they're not top tier shows. They have a lot of people writing for them (for some reason) so they just assign what they feel like assigning to whomever they feel like assigning it to, and if multiple people are interested in the same show, good luck getting to cover it. It's a fun gig for about five minutes, but it gets old incredibly quick when you realize how limited you are in what you get to cover for no pay. Honestly, don't bother. If everyone stopped writing for greedy websites like this for free, writers would actually get paid for their work and sites like this wouldn't be able to take advantage.
