Your staff is a mess. There is rampant transphobia among the rank and file and the veteran staff who are supposed to help the transgender clients we get. We recently had a lecture style meeting led by a senior staff member about STIs and HIV, a very relevant issue for the LGBTQ clients and how we care for them. The senior staff member described penises as male genitalia and vaginas as female. This naturally upset a number of the trans staff members, and I?ve heard them complain about how this bothered them. Many of the regular youth counselor staff (the people who are there daily with the residents in their shelter facilities) regularly misgender clients in front of other staff. I don?t know if it?s out of ignorance or what, but how can you run an organization where you?re suppose to help these people and misgender them, daily?! I?ve heard totally passing trans masculine and trans femme clients referred to by their birth gender, and non-binary clients? pronouns are constantly disregarded. Some reviews here say that there is few queer/black/trans staff and it?s very true. The community members seem to split from here soon. I?ve mentioned my issues with the company to a few acquaintances in my field and they?ve all heard the stories about AFC and how it treats clients and staff. Don?t let the PR fool you. The work being done here is valuable, but the people doing it don?t know what they?re doing. Policies toward staff and shift duties are not clearly outlined. The on-boarding process is very drawn out and quite painful for something so mundane.
