Joe Sottolano, hailing from New York, was one of only 36 players chosen nationwide for the Team USA trials in 1990, demonstrating his early potential. He also played a pivotal role in his team's victory at the 1988 Division III NCAA Baseball National Championship, where he was honored as the Most Outstanding Player.
Over his 23-year coaching career, with 14 years as a head coach, Joe has been instrumental in guiding over 20 student-athletes to the MLB Amateur Draft and has coached 46 All-Americans. His leadership helped propel Chris Rowley to the Major Leagues.
Joe's coaching philosophy is deeply rooted in the principles of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence—values instilled during his tenure at West Point. These guiding principles have shaped his approach on and off the field, fostering a culture of discipline and commitment.
His journey began at Minisink Valley High School in Orange County, New York, where his exceptional skill earned him the 1986 Times Herald Records Tri-County Player of the Year title. He then advanced his career as a left-handed pitcher at Ithaca College, leading his team to a national championship and earning the title of most outstanding player of the Division III World Series during his sophomore year.
After graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in PE Teaching and a minor in Health, Joe embarked on his coaching career at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. He took charge of the pitching staff and the team's strength and agility programs. His recruiting efforts were vital to building a future championship contender.
Joe later returned to Ithaca College to earn a Master of Science, further refining his coaching abilities and assisting with the baseball team.
In 1992, Joe's professional path led him to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Starting as an Army Assistant Coach, he was promoted to Head Coach in 2000. There, he transformed the Division I Baseball Team, surpassing recruitment and fundraising goals and fostering a competitive and ethical team environment. He took a hands-on approach in all aspects of team training and development.
From 2000 to 2013, Joe elevated USMA's baseball program to national prominence, securing multiple NCAA tournament berths and becoming the winningest coach in the Academy's history.
He managed a substantial annual budget, significantly increasing fundraising efforts and broadening the Academy's donor base. His role also extended to serving as a brand ambassador on major sports networks.
Following his tenure at West Point, Joe served as a premier instructor at the Frozen Ropes National Training Center and later as the Lead Travel Team Instructor at the Extra Innings Baseball/Softball Facility, where he developed comprehensive training manuals for coaches.
Currently, Joe oversees the physical education curriculum and athletic activities at Holy Family Schools in Alabama, implementing programs that instill ethical solid, leadership, and Christian values. He also coaches the 14u Southeast Canes Scout team with his sons and works as a sales inspector for Yellowhammer Roofing in Huntsville, Alabama.
Personally, Joe enjoys time with his wife, Lori, and their two sons, engaging in hunting and fishing. Committed to his faith and community, he actively supports local charities and provides for people in need, reflecting his deep-seated values of service and generosity.
Joe Sottolano's life and career are testaments to his dedication to Excellence, integrity, and service. He leaves a lasting impact on all who cross his path.
