Dr. Kamran Massoumi, MD, is an ophthalmologist and the owner and president of the Oklahoma Eye Institute and Omni Surgical Center in Lawton, Oklahoma. Born in 1967 in Tehran, Iran, he comes from a family with strong political and medical connections. His paternal grandfather was a prominent military officer and politician, serving as the Minister of Agriculture under the Shah’s regime. On his mother’s side, He descends from Iranian royalty, with his maternal grandfather being only three generations removed from the King of Iran. Despite his family’s political background, his grandfather’s pioneering career in ophthalmology inspired Him to pursue a similar path.
His grandfather pioneered Iranian ophthalmology, significantly establishing the country’s first ophthalmology department and addressing the trachoma pandemic, which caused widespread blindness. Dr. Massoumi’s grandfather’s efforts had a lasting impact on the field, and his work profoundly influenced Him. By age five, He had already dedicated his life to improving vision care, following in his grandfather's footsteps.
1983 He moved to the United States with his mother and younger sister due to the Iran-Iraq War. They settled in Marin County, California, where He quickly adapted to his new life, learning English and adjusting to American culture. After completing high school at Marin Catholic High School, he attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a double major in Medical Physics and Middle Eastern Studies. His academic performance earned him acceptance into St. Louis University Medical School, where he graduated with distinction in research. He went on to complete his residency in ophthalmology at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio.
After finishing his residency, He initially planned to return to California. However, a shortage of ophthalmologists in Western Oklahoma led him to join the BVA practice in 2002. His grandfather’s dedication to public service motivated him to stay in the region. Over the years, he introduced advanced technology and expanded specialized services, eventually founding the Oklahoma Eye Institute in 2014. The institute brought advanced services, such as retinal and plastic surgery specialties, to the area. He continues to provide cataract, glaucoma, and laser treatments, ensuring that patients in Western Oklahoma receive top-tier care close to home.
In addition to founding the Oklahoma Eye Institute, Dr. Massoumi recognized the need for local surgical facilities and opened the Omni Surgical Center in Lawton and an office-based operating room in Elk City. These centers have alleviated the burden on patients who previously had to travel long distances for surgery. His long-term goal is to attract more ophthalmologists to Western Oklahoma, ensuring that the region remains self-sufficient in vision care.
Outside of his professional life, He is married and has two daughters, both of whom are involved in martial arts. The family holds black belts in Taekwondo, with his youngest daughter holding a second-degree black belt. He enjoys traveling and has participated in medical mission trips, including one to Vietnam, where he performed eye surgeries to help restore vision for those in need.
Dr. Kamran Massoumi’s work has profoundly impacted the availability and quality of ophthalmology care in Western Oklahoma. His commitment to improving access to care has helped the region meet its vision care needs locally, reducing the need for patients to travel to other cities. As he continues to expand his practice, He remains dedicated to providing high-quality care and ensuring the future of ophthalmology services in Western Oklahoma.
