It was during his second year of law school that he became interested in working in criminal law. He was selected by the Prosecuting Attorney's Association of Michigan for an internship.
This gave him real-life experience putting together cases and fighting for convictions. His determination, knowledge, and skill helped him to win several misdemeanor conviction cases as a second year law student. As he was researching and helping to support these clients, he realized that there was a strong need for proactive defense attorneys. The prosecution is not always correct and does make mistakes. Clients also need someone who will fight on their behalf and stand up for their rights even in the most challenging cases. He believes that everyone has the right to a fair and just trial.
Upon graduating he took a position as a full-time prosecutor. Many of his cases involved drug offenses, drunk driving, home invasion, serious assaults, and embezzlement. He became well-versed in these areas and gained a deeper understanding of the Michigan Jury Instructions, Sentencing Guidelines, Michigan Compiled Laws and complex criminal defense strategies. Working with a wide variety of clients, he tried cases of all types. It helped him to build a strong foundation on which to draw from when constructing arguments and cases. It is important that lawyers become familiar with different types of cases because it allows them to apply these skills to other areas and provide better support for their clients.
When he went into private practice, Attorney Patrick Fragel focused on his work as a criminal defense lawyer, fighting for the opposite side. By this point he knew very well how prosecution worked and was able to think as a prosecutor. This helped him to develop a better defense because he was able to see the case from both sides. He completed his graduate studies in organizational goal setting and earned his Master of Public Administration (MPA) from Northern Michigan University. Following this achievement he spent time working for the Department of Institutional Research conducting outcome assessments.
