Joshua Fink is a lifelong outdoorsman and avid mountain climber who has tackled some of the world’s hardest peaks
While the days of his most dangerous and breathtaking adventures are behind him, Josh Fink still plans to pursue his outdoor passions well into his dotage. Hiking, canoeing and snowshoeing may appear to be relatively nondescript when compared to his previous exploits of endurance and bravery, but Josh knows that there’s still a wealth of experience and knowledge that can be gained from even these more conventional outdoor excursions.

Already having been successful in giving his children Carrie and Mike an appreciation for nature and outdoor activity, he still works to make sure his grandchildren develop the same love that has been passed down in his family for generations. His children still manage to find time through their own kids and career schedules to make weekend visits, during which the family enjoys hiking and canoeing, and whenever possible Josh will still try to excite both his grandchildren and all kids in general about the outdoors with his incredible stories of climbing some of the world’s most difficult and dangerous peaks.

From the time he was young, being outdoors has been something that his simultaneously excited and relaxed Josh, and there is no reason why that will ever stop -- regardless of his age. His house full of photographs and memories from around the world will continue to inspire the family even after he’s passed on, and Josh Fink can’t think of anything better than this: although his list of accomplishments could well rival that of an adventurer of the previous century, his says the one he is most proud of is his family.
When asked about his childhood, Josh Fink takes on a tone of warm nostalgia. As early as he can remember, his days were spent with his brother, climbing everything in sight on the family property. While other neighborhood children contented themselves with more traditional activities -- building blocks and riding bikes -- Josh and Matt, his brother, couldn’t get the same thrill out of these activities that they could from hiking, building tree houses, and trying to ensnare small wildlife.

Josh Fink credits this unusual love for the outdoors to his father. The elder Fink would often take Josh and Matt on weekend hiking and climbing expeditions deep into the woods, allowing them to summit at an early age many of the local peaks. While the trips served as an excellent bonding exercise for the family, it was also a time where Josh’s father could teach his sons about proper technique and basic climbing safety, crucial parts of the Fink brothers’ lifelong dedication to the outdoors.

Getting to learn basic harness technique and climbing strategies, the trips were the first taste of the outdoors for the Fink brothers, and some of Josh’s fondest memories. If the family didn’t go climbing, they also took trips to go fishing, canoeing, and snowshoeing, engaging with the outdoors as much as they could. Regardless of the weather, Josh’s mother eventually learned never to expect the Fink brothers to come inside until well after dark.

While his mother assumed that Josh and Matt would eventually ‘grow out’ of these activities, the opposite actually took hold -- their passion only became more resolute as they grew into adults. While grand trips across the world to climb some of the most dangerous peaks punctuated his adult life, even his casual time was often spent outdoors -- be it fishing, camping, or just generally spending time among nature, Josh was always finding the time to be outside. One thing that has remained constant his entire life is that being outdoors has the capacity to simultaneously excite and relax him in a way that nothing else can.

As children, Matt and Josh Fink spent some of their rare time inside drooling over exotic accounts of famous worldwide locations and peaks. They made promises to each other at a young age that they would one day tackle some of the most legendary mountains -- Kilimanjaro and Everest, dreaming like any imaginative young boys would. As a result, when they became adults, their passion for the outdoors in general transformed into a singular love -- mountain climbing. As they grew older interest only increased, and instead of letting the dreams slip away, they actually decided to act on their fantasies.

Throughout their adult lives, they made voyages to all the mountains they had promised they would, and the result is that their list of accomplishments reads like that of an explorer’s from an older time. With The Andes, The Matterhorn, Everest, McKinley and Kilimanjaro under their belt, the sheer breadth and scope of their climbing experience is hard to find in modern times. Where some people make it their life work to take on just one of these fabled climbs, Matt and Josh Fink managed to do them all together, just like they said they would when they were kids.

To this day, a stop to either Fink brothers’ households will reward the visitor with an array of pictures that seem as if they could have been ripped from the pages of a National Geographic, and both are talented storytellers who can regale friends and family for hours with thrilling accounts of their most dangerous exploits. Josh Fink still says that these trips were the most thrilling of his life, and he’s glad to have had not just the opportunity to undertake them, but also to have gotten the rare chance to share them with his brother.

While the responsibilities that come with being a father dictated that he tone down the extremity of his outdoor adventures, by no means did starting his own family get in the way of his love for nature. He was determined to give his kids, Carrie and Mike, the same childhood experiences that his father had blessed him with. Between himself and his wife Suzanne frequently taking them on long weekend trips filled with hiking and fishing, they were successful in teaching their children to appreciate and enjoy the natural world around them. While raising a family and spending time in nature in a more relaxed way didn’t give him the same thrill that summiting famous peaks did, he learned to enjoy the time and relax in a different way. Despite his impressive list of achievements, he says his proudest is his family.

As proof of his parenting success, Mike and Carrie still find time to visit Josh Fink and his wife for casual fishing and hiking trips, even though both have careers and kids of their own now. Their trips together recall some of the bonding that Josh and Mike experienced with their own father, and it is time the whole family values immensely.

Now a grandfather, Josh is old enough that he perhaps doesn’t have the same physical capacities that he once had, but still finds ways to teach his grandchildren valuable lessons about life and the outdoors. Watching movies and documentaries about the famous peaks he has summited, he is quick to point out factual errors in their portrayals, as based off his own experiences. More importantly, he is excited about the opportunity to go on trips with his grandchildren, as his father did with him and he did with his kids. Excited at the prospect of teaching them the finer points of climbing safety, fishing, and snowshoeing, Josh Fink eagerly anticipates his next great life adventure.
