Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Club is a professional hockey franchise that represents North Carolina in the National Hockey League. Originally founded in 1971 as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association (WHA), the team joined the NHL as the Hartford Whalers in 1979. Peter Karmanos, founder and chairman of Compuware, led a group that acquired the team in 1994, relocating it first to Greensboro, North Carolina, before settling in Raleigh in 1999. Playing host that the RBC Center, the team earned its first and only Stanley Cup championship in 2006.
