St. John's College believes in the "Great Books," even as the canon is under attack elsewhere in academia. Students at the college study the classics in literature, math, philosophy, and science. The curriculum starts with Aeschylus, Aristotle, Euclid, and Plato, taught freshman year; students work their way through the millennia of higher learning, finishing with the works of contemporary thinkers and writers, which are taught to seniors. St. John's (not to be confused with the university in New York City) is the third-oldest institution of higher learning in the US (after Harvard and William & Mary); it was founded in Maryland in 1696 and opened a Santa Fe campus in 1964. Each campus has about 450 students.
