United Negro College Fund (UNCF) knows that a mind is a terrible thing to waste. The organization provides financial assistance for higher education to deserving African-American students. UNCF, the oldest and largest minority higher education assistance program, provides funding to more than 60,000 students at 1,000 colleges. About 60% of these students are the first in their families to attend college. UNCF also provides operating funds and IT services to about 40 historically black colleges and universities like Bethune-Cookman, Morehouse, Xavier, and Voorhees College. The not-for-profit organization was founded in 1944 by Dr. Frederick D. Patterson with 27 charter member colleges.
