Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) has a Congressional charter to care. The not-for-profit group provides support for Vietnam veterans and their families and is the only such agency sanctioned by the US government. It promotes Vietnam veterans' issues including homelessness and health care -- Agent Orange exposure is one key issue -- and has about 50,000 members and 635 local chapters throughout the US, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam. VVA seeks to eliminate discrimination toward Vietnam Veterans. It has programs specifically for women and minorities, scholarships, government benefit assistance, and government advocacy. Founded in 1978, VVA is funded completely by private donations.
