Named not for a saint but for the river in upstate New York that separates the US and Canada, St. Lawrence University is a four-year liberal arts college that also offers graduate degrees in education. The university has an enrollment of more than 2,300 students. Actors Kirk Douglas and Viggo Mortensen and US Senator Susan Collins are among the school's alumni. Founded in 1856 by members of the Universalist Church (part of the liberal wing of Protestantism that has since merged with the Unitarian faith), St. Lawrence is the oldest continuously coeducational institution of higher learning in New York State. It is located in Canton, New York.
