Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) is a public university located in the Pineywoods of East Texas. Its campus, in the heart of Nacogdoches, was part of the original homestead of Thomas J. Rusk, an early Texas patriot and US senator. The school's 11,000-plus enrolled students may choose from more than 80 majors in some 120 study areas including business and nursing. The student-faculty ratio is 20 to 1. Stephen F. Austin also offers a number of undergraduate, graduate, and certification programs online or partially online. Notable alumni include former NFL coach Bum Phillips and Don Henley of the Eagles. Named for the founding father of Texas, the university was created in 1923 as a teacher's college.
