Company Profile

We design and make technology that takes the limits off living. In 1856, T.J. Smith opened his family pharmacy in Hull, UK and developed a new way to refine cod liver oil. On his death 40 years later, his nephew Horatio Nelson Smith took over, giving us the second part of our name. The company grew rapidly during World War One, supplying surgical and field dressings to the Armed Forces. After World War One, we continued to expand in the wound care sector, inventing Elastoplast in 1928. Since then, we have continued to explore. In the 80s and 90s, we entered into the arthroscopy and sports medicine businesses. 17,500 employees and 100+ countries later, we're making more of the world's leading products and we're bringing them to more of the world. Because we believe that everyone should be able to live a Life Unlimited. Mission: Physical health is never just about our body. It’s our mind, feelings and ambitions. When something holds it back, it’s our whole life on hold. We’re here to change that, to use technology to take the limits off living, and help other medical professionals do the same. So that farmworkers, rugby players, grandmas and their grandkids stare down fear, see that anything’s possible, then go on stronger. Inspired by a simple promise. Two words that bring together all we do…
