Aperam formed in September 2010 when ArcelorMittal spun off its stainless steel operations. The company makes cold- and hot-rolled stainless and specialty steel, as well as grain-oriented (GO) and non-grain oriented (NGO) electrical steel, and nickel alloys in the form of bars, strips, wire, wire rod, and plates. From its five steel mills in Europe (France and Belgium) and one in Brazil, the company has a production capacity of 2.5 million tons (although it sold 1.7 million tons in 2010, up from 1.4 million in 2009). Aperam also globally operates about 20 steel service centers, where the metal is processed and distributed around the world. ArcelorMittal chairman Lakshmi Mittal owns 40% of the company's stock.
