Fabulous Co-workers, Bad Management
On the surface, everything seems very nice but, it is only an illusion. Although management says they care what employees think, if they disagree with something that seems unfair, they will be called into their supervisor's office to be "retrained". Once a year, we were given what we were told was an anonymous evaluation to fill out rating different aspects of the job and company. At one of the quarterly meetings, they discussed the findings. If there were any negative comments, they were dismissed as, "those must be disgruntled employees". I know that how those evaluations were filled out was not necessarily how a lot of employees felt, because of conversations employees would have with each other. People were afraid to put what they really felt, in fear that the evaluations were not really confidential. The tone of the company is one of micro-management. At quarterly meetings, they would discuss what they could do to keep employees happy but, giving them a garden, or popcorn is not going to do it. The building that the company is located in is beautiful but, this is a non-profit and it just looks wrong to spend so much money worrying about all the fancy interior design. Management employs a culture of co-workers spying on co-workers. Management is creating a file on you of everything you do they deem that doesn't fit with how they think you should think. You will not know this until you get your yearly evaluation and then prepare to be surprised. This creates an atmosphere of distrust and high stress. Not a lot of opportunity for advancement.
