Apple ID or iCloud Greyed Out in Settings? Fixes to Try

  1. Check your Internet connection

If your iPhone has a weak cellular or Wi-Fi connection, you may not be able to check various aspects of your Apple ID. That can be the reason why you can’t Download this App. A quick way to fix connectivity issues is to turn airplane mode on and off. This will help reset the Wi-Fi and cellular radios and fix minor errors for both.

To do this, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen and tap the airplane mode icon. When it turns orange, wait 10 seconds and tap it again.

If that doesn't help, explore other ways to fix a slow Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.

  1. Check your iPhone clock

An inaccurate iPhone clock is another reason to gray out your Apple ID or iCloud account. Check this by going to General > Date & Time in the Settings app. If the switch next to Set Automatically is on, but the date, time, and time zone appear incorrect, adjust your iPhone's clock manually.

  1. Updating to the latest version of iOS

Outdated versions of iPhone system software have serious bugs that cause native apps like Settings to malfunction. Also, early iterations of new iOS versions like iOS 16.0 contain many bugs, errors, and other issues. Installing the latest iOS updates can help resolve them.

Go to General > Software Update via the Settings app. Then click Download and Install while the update is waiting. If your iPhone is enrolled in Apple's beta developer program, see how to switch your iOS device back to the public channel.

  1. Reset network settings on iPhone

Your Apple ID or iCloud account may be grayed out in Settings on your iPhone or iPad due to broken network settings. To fix this, do the following.

 1) Open the Settings app and tap General > Transfer or Restore iPhone.

 2) Touch Reset > Reset network settings and enter the device password.

 3) Tap Reset Network Settings to confirm.

After resetting the network settings, manually reconnect to all Wi-Fi networks (this will delete all previously remembered networks) or use cellular data and confirm that you can use the Apple ID management functions without problems.

  1. Reset all settings on iPhone

If resetting iPhone network settings didn't solve the grayed-out Apple ID problem, consider doing a hard reset later. You won't lose any data, but it's best to create an iCloud backup or a local Finder (Mac)/iTunes (PC) backup beforehand.

You can reset all iPhone settings by repeating the steps above but selecting the Reset all settings option.

  1. Check Settings Profiles

If you use an iPhone owned by your organization, your Mobile Device Management (MDM) or settings profile may prevent you from accessing your Apple ID or iCloud settings.

To check, go to Settings > General > VPN and Device Manager. If a profile is listed, do not delete it. Instead, ask your organization's IT department for help. If you own your iPhone and think you accidentally downloaded and installed a configuration profile from a third-party source, delete it. Simply tap  Remove Profile or Remove Control and follow all the on-screen instructions to remove it and access your Apple ID settings.
