Robert Shavitz a UNCG alumnus, is seeking to realize his dream of becoming a professional golf instructor.
All his life, Robert Shavitz has wanted one thing, and one thing only—namely, to become a PGA-affiliated golf instructor. This is a dream job, for sure, and one that he has envisioned for as far back as he can remember. While many dream jobs never come to fruition, however, Shavitz’ very likely will, as, even now, he is finishing the long process of becoming a certified, professional golf pro.

This process probably has its roots in his childhood, where he first became an enthusiast of the sport, but it really kicked into high gear when he enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. It was here that Robert Shavitz began studying all of the formal techniques, pedagogical methods, and physical education standards that are now helping him to realize his golf instructor dream.

Indeed, for Robert Shavitz of UNCG was a crucial step in the journey, but not the final destination. He is approaching his goal now, though, as he is in the final stages of becoming an instructor—currently working with the First Tee Program, among other golf organizations and non-profits.

Incidentally, for Shavitz, his college UNCG is now in the rearview mirror—but he remains zealous for many of the fields he studied when he was in school. This includes some classes he took in media studies. Even now, he is both a fan and a scholar of TV, film, and other forms of media.

All of this is to say that he is a driven and committed fellow—inching closer and closer to getting the job of his dreams!
For Robert Shavitz, UNCG alum and golf coach, hitting the links is not just a matter of fun or of recreation. No, golf is something he feels strongly about—something he loves with a burning passion. As such, he views golf not merely as something to do in his spare time—not merely a diversion—but as his very future. Indeed, his dream is nothing less than becoming a professional golf instructor, something he has already, to some extent, realized. In the months and years to come, Shavitz believes that he will fully realize that dream, taking the ultimate step of becoming a PG Golf Instructor.

This is not a recent desire or a passing fad for Robert. No, golf has been a huge part of his life for some years now. In fact, he can trace his zeal for golf—and his desire to be a professional coach—all the way back to his boyhood.

He started playing golf when he was just a boy of 10, in fact, and was quickly seduced by its complexities and its pleasures. It was when he was 13—still so very young, by most standards—that he got serious about golf as a profession. His desire was never necessarily to become a professional athlete, though, so much as a professional instructor—someone who works to foster the skills and the passions of other players.

According to Robert Shavitz, UNCG was the natural destination as he sought to make his golf dream a reality. He enrolled in the college and quickly found his way onto the golf team. This came on the heels of four years of successful high school play, and at the time, it seemed as though his road to professional golf instructor status was going to be a smooth one.

Of course, things seldom work out so easily, and Robert Shavitz soon found himself facing a major challenge—specifically, a fractured elbow. This accident sidelined him, and seemed like it might spell the end of his golfing career.

This could have been a career-ender for some—and Shavitz’ career had yet to even begin! He refused to let it kill his dream, however, and so he turned to golf as a motivational tool. Indeed, even with a bum elbow, he continued watching, studying, and, eventually, playing golf once more—and he was more confident than ever that his destiny was to become a professional golf instructor.

Robert Shavitz, UNCG graduate, has taught golf off and on for the past several years. He has offered many private lessons, both to kids and adult players. With that said, what he really wants is to become a PGA Golf Pro—and he is working toward meeting that goal even now.

What is it about golf that makes Shavitz love it so much? He says that, in many ways, golf is a perfect preparation for the rest of life. The standards of discipline and etiquette in golf reflect the way people should behave in all other activities, Shavitz believes—and no matter what barrier a golfer runs into, there is still another shot to take. This, more than anything, summarizes the worldview of Robert Shavitz, UNCG alum.

Today, he is honing his abilities as a golfer and as an instructor through a few different activities. He is involved with a charity called the First Tee Program, which—as its very name suggests—is golf-centered. Additionally, he is the golf coach at Greensboro Day School. He has previously caddied at various public links.

Of course, even beyond golf, there are topics about which Shavitz is passionate. He is a big believer in the arts, and has even worked as an art instructor in days gone by. This is to say nothing of his love of media—TV and film, in particular.

Media was what he studied at UNCG, actually—and for Robert that was indeed a place where he could immerse himself in his favorite movies and TV programs, while also broadening his horizons and developing his tastes. He remains interested in these things, and he spends much time studying film and TV when he is not out on the links.

His interest in media has served him not only personally, but also professionally. This much is evident from his previous association with Geffen Productions. He did an internship there, and he learned much about the way film and TV work. His daily responsibilities included editing, camera set-up, light set-up, and even the formulation of ideas for new TV shows.

There are still other topics on which Shavitz is knowledgeable and passionate. One of them is studying abroad. He is a firm believer that studying in a foreign country is a positively horizon-expanding thing for any college student, and he is grateful for the time he had to study abroad.

And what a place he chose to do it in! His study abroad destination was Florence, Italy—a city so rich in beauty and history that Shavitz feels as though he barely skimmed its surface. With that said, he is thankful to have had the opportunity to spend so much time in the city, and to see other parts of Italy, as well.

The bottom line is that Shavitz is someone whose talents and interests are many, but whose dream is fairly singular. It is true enough that he loves movies, that he is thrilled by the study of TV, and that he is passionate about foreign travel. Above all, though, Shavitz is a lover of golf, and he is excited to see where that takes him.

By all accounts, it should take him far. He is working hard to see his PGA instructor dreams become a reality, and he looks forward to the day when they do. Robert Shavitz, UNCG alum, is driven to see this happen.
What does the future hold for Robert Shavitz? That’s impossible to say with any certainty, of course—who among us can accurately predict the future?—but right now, his future looks nothing if not bright. He is a recent graduate from a school that he loves, and even now he is making progress toward seeing his dream job become an everyday reality.

That dream job, of course, is PGA Golf Instructor—and while that profession may by the future of Robert Shavitz, it is very much rooted in his past. He has been an avid golfer ever since he was 10 years old, and he is excited about his future of helping others grow in their love and knowledge of the game.

As such, with UNCG now behind him, Robert Shavitz is working toward becoming a golf pro. He works at the Greensboro Day School as a golf coach, a position that he has held since last year. He also works alongside several golf-related non-profits, and he plans to continue doing so well into the future.

Additionally, Shavitz hopes that his future holds further explorations in the media. This is something he studied in school, and he has even interned at a production company. Film and TV are both passions of Robert Shavitz, he acquired these hobbies during his time at UNCG, and when he is not on the green, he can often be found watching a favorite show or studying a classic film.
