When it comes to receiving proper dental care, Dr. Rene Piedra, DMD, knows that many patients are hampered by their intense fear and anxiety of dentists. This is why he makes it his mission to help those patients who are the most afraid of dentistry find the good oral hygiene and healthy smiles that they need by reducing their anxiety however he can.
Rene Piedra performs his work in Miami, FL, at New Era Dentistry, where he focuses on cosmetic and sedation dentistry for some of the most challenging of patients. With more than a decade of experience in his field, he offers an experience that is truly one of a kind to those patients who want to transform their oral health and their smiles but, for whatever reason, are afraid of the dentist.
A Philosophy of Understanding and Care
“When I completed my post-graduate education, I made a commitment to help patients that could not see the dentist because of fear or bad past experiences,” says Rene. “I take great pride in finally changing the lives of those who once avoided the dentist, through the creation of beautiful smiles, improved health, the elimination of pain, and through comfort.”
As a part of his continuing commitment to his south South Florida community, Piedra and his practice work according to the philosophy that no patient and no case is ever too difficult to not deserve their understanding and a professional standard of dental care. Moreover, he has helped to make it possible for many patients with special needs such as autism, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, Prader-Willi, and so on to avail themselves of the level of dental care that they deserve. Many of these individuals would otherwise continue neglecting their own oral health out of irrational fear or a traumatic past history with bad dental experience.
Since 1998, Rene Piedra, DMD, has seen more than 32,000 patients come through his doors in order to take advantage of his unique and specialized brand of care and treatment. As a native of South Florida himself, he has spent the last 10 years and more honing this professional philosophy and delivering anxiety-free dental experiences to the most skittish of patients.
Rene is also a member of the Special Care Dentistry Association, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, and the International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine. He has been recognized as a leader in the fields of both cosmetic dentistry and sedation dentistry, and as such, he has been featured in a variety of media. These include Primer Impacto, the American Academy of General Dentistry’s Journal, the Miami Herald, Hispanic Business magazine, Latina magazine, Univision, NBC News, and Imagén magazine, among others.
A Thorough Education and Many Awards
Dr. Piedra began his ascent to dental success by enrolling in Florida International University in 1990, where he studied for the next four years. In 1994, he graduated and moved on to the School of Dental Medicine at Tufts University, where he earned his degree in dental medicine after graduating in 1998.
The same year as his graduation, Rene Piedra, DMD, also won the Leadership Award from Pierre Fauchard Academy. He then went on to win the Fellowship Award from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists in 2001. In 2006, his business gained recognition through a CEO of the Year Award granted by the South Florida Business Journal.
Dr. Piedra also won a Humanitarian Award for his endeavors in human rights. A year later, in 2007, he made history by earning the first Laser Periodontal Therapy License to be granted in Miami-Dade County from the Institute of Advanced Laser Dentistry. This was also the year when Piedra’s practice made the Hispanic 100 as the 15th Fastest Growing Hispanic Company, a title awarded by Hispanic Business magazine.
After graduating from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Rene opened his private dental practice in Coral Gables, FL. Today he runs a practice in Pinecrest, FL. Here he puts his skills to use by focusing on sedation dentistry in order to better promote a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums amongst his patients. In addition, he also has both basic and advanced training in the injection techniques of cosmetic dermal fillers and botulinum toxin, more commonly known as Botox. This focus on facial esthetics has coincided with his service as both a proctor and a mentor of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics.
Strengths Displayed and Services Offered
Dr. Piedra is known as a pioneer for the availability of both sedation dentistry and non-invasive alternatives in the field of dentistry throughout the Miami area. In addition, he is credited with introducing the LANAP procedure to Miami-Dade County. This made him the first to offer the only laser alternative to gum surgery for the treatment of gum disease that is approved by the FDA.
One big key to the success that Rene Piedra, DMD, has found has been his ability to effectively communicate with his patients. When working with individuals who are especially terrified of receiving dental work, clear and comfortable communication is a vital skill. With his bilingual proficiency in both English and Spanish, Dr. Piedra is able to ease his patients’ anxiety and worries by helping them more comfortably approach their necessary dental work, thereby freeing them from the embarrassment of their anxiety.
Easing Minds as Well as Mouths
When it comes to his sedation services, Piedra specializes in three different techniques in order to make his patients as comfortable as possible and ensure that they feel little to no pain or discomfort.
The first of these techniques is simply talking his patients through their anxiety. Communication between dentists and their patients is an important step in beating any level of dental anxiety, as Rene Piedra, DMD, knows well. By simply having a frank discussion with his patients about their fears, their treatment options, and the techniques made available by modern medicine to reduce pain and discomfort, he is able to drastically reduce the anxiety that many individuals feel about their impending dental appointments.
The second of these techniques is anxiolysis, or oral sedation. This is a technique developed specifically for those patients who have increased trouble with gagging when receiving dental treatment or who are afraid of needles. Through the use of these anxiolytic oral sedatives, he is able to calm his patients’ anxiety and, at the same time, reduce their risk of gagging during treatment, which can naturally lead to even more anxiety.
The third technique used by Rene Piedra, DMD, is conscious sedation with an IV. This is a more extreme form of anxiety help that he rarely utilizes on his patients. However, patients with special needs or advanced phobias of dentistry sometimes necessitate such in-depth sedative measures. In all cases, he says, the patient remains responsive, aware, and conscious, just much more relaxed than they would have been otherwise.
One of the biggest ongoing goals of Rene Piedra, DMD, is the adaptation and utilization of new industry innovations throughout his practice. He is a firm believer in the power of advancing medical techniques and technology to both ease the work of dentists and ease the minds of their patients. Through the use of these new tools and strategies, he is able to reduce the amount of pain and discomfort that his patients feel as much as possible and substantially reduce the amount of visits necessary to complete treatment.
Using Lasers for Simplicity and Comfort
One highly useful innovation that he has adopted for his own work is the use of special laser devices in many different dental procedures. Known commonly as laser dentistry, these instruments have been used by dentists since the 1990s but continue to be refined and enhanced to this day.
With laser dentistry, Rene Piedra, DMD, can more easily and more painlessly perform a variety of procedures. These include the removal of overgrown tissues caused by certain medications, gum tissues that have become inflamed, and muscle attachments that are limiting proper movement for patients. Lasers can also be used in dental procedures to reduce the discomfort of cold sores and cankers, treat infections in root canals, speed up tooth whitening, expose partially erupted wisdom teeth, and perform biopsy procedures, among many other things.
The biggest benefit of laser dentistry to patients is that it removes the need to use more worrisome and potentially painful implements such as drills and scalpels, thereby easing both discomfort and anxiety in patients. Certain types of laser procedures also remove the necessity for anesthesia administration as well as reduce the time needed for healing by controlling bleeding during dental surgery.
Beyond keeping up with the latest in laser dentistry, Rene also keeps his eye on innovations occurring both in his field, such as advancements in sedation, and outside his immediate expertise, such as the use of 3-D printing in dental manufacturing.
By staying on the cutting edge of innovation and always putting his patients’ comfort and peace of mind first, Rene Piedra, DMD, makes himself stand out in his industry as one of the top dentists in his field.
