Richard started his path to becoming an orthopaedic surgeon at the University of Michigan. It is here that he earned his Bachelor of Science, graduating with distinction. He went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating with honors.
An important part of any physician or surgeon’s education is their post-graduate training. Upon graduating, Dr. Obedian completed his internship at New York University School Of Medicine in the department of general surgery. Here he received more in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in the surgical field. Following his internships, he completed his residency at the Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute in the department of orthopaedic surgery. Realizing his passion and talent for spine care, he went on to complete his fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in spine and scoliosis surgery.

Following the completion of his fellowship, Dr. Richard Obedian began working at Orthopaedic and Sports Associates of Long Island until he left in 2003 to open his own practice, Island Spine and Sports. Committed to helping others, he serves as the chief of orthopaedics at Woodbury Center for Healthcare, and attending physician in the department of orthopaedic surgery at the following hospitals:
